I never knew it was even possible for a 4-year old to get RSV, let alone have both RSV and pneumonia at the same time. Unfortunately, our sweet Hunter does. I really think it all started on Saturday. It was such a beautiful day, a little overcast, but beautiful, so I took Hunter & Paizlei to the park to play for a while. When we came home, I let them play outside as well, in our backyard. We have such a deep back yard, and they always stay back there, so I just came inside to do a few things, checking on them every 5 minutes or so. I heard Paizlei at my back/bedroom door. I went to see what she wanted, and found Hunter in the baby swing (that attaches to our swing set) and the swing had tipped and he was strapped in, hanging upside down. It sounds worse than it really was. I had just checked on them, not 3 minutes prior to Paizlei coming to the door, and he was swinging and having a good time. When I saw him, I ran as fast as I could to get to him. Because he was so scared, he had an asthma attack, and was coughing up a lung...at least that's what it sounded like. I've been vigilant ever 4 hours around the clock, to make sure he gets a breathing treatment of Pulmicort or Albuterol. Every day since Saturday, he keeps getting worse. I took him the doctor on Monday. I was told to keep up with the breathing treatments, an antibiotic, Tylenol and Motrin every 3 hours.
Since last night, he has had a fever above 102, without any break in it. He was also coughing so hard this morning, he was throwing up. I decided I needed to take him back to the doctor. Before going to the appointment, I took him to the hospital for x-rays and blood work. The doctor told me today, he definitely sees pneumonia in his lungs, and he is still wheezing really bad when he coughs, his oxygen is down a little, which suggests he has RSV. Not. What. I. Wanted. To. Hear. He also gave him a shot of Rocefen, in addition to the Azithromax he's been on since Monday. I'm supposed to be more vigilant in my efforts of breathing treatments. How much more vigilant can I be, when I can only give him one every 4 hours, AND I have been doing them around the clock? Anyway, the doctor said we still have 7-10 days of this, and it's going to get worse before it gets better. We are supposed to watch for blueness around his mouth, keep his fevers down, and watch his breathing. If he starts breathing more than 40 breaths per minute, we are supposed to take him to the ER.
Before I had my own kids, I would always hear other parents say, "I wish I could take this sickness from you, so you didn't have to be in pain". I never really knew what they meant, until I had my own kids. I would totally take this away from Hunter, in a heart beat. He is SO, not my Hunter. All he wants to do is lay or sleep. It's really heart breaking. Hopefully, he will be up and his normal self in a few days.
