Ruffle Skirt Pattern

One afternoon as I was perusing Pinterest, I came across this super cute, super easy little girl ruffle skirt using old worn-out and/or holey jeans.  I read through the instructions on how to make it, and realized just how super easy it would be.  It took me a while to actually sit down and make one two.  I have several other jeans I am going to be using to make more with.  It is seriously the easiest skirt to make.

Follow along with me as I documented the whole process with the skirt I made today.

Step 1:  Cut your holey/worn-out jeans anywhere below the zipper and above the crotch.  Mine is nowhere near straight or perfect.

Step 2:  Measure the jeans from side to side and times that number by 4.  That will give you the length of both ruffles.

Step 3:  Cut ruffles.  The original pattern called for a 4" wide ruffle and a 2 3/4" wide ruffle.  I did that on my first skirt, which came out really short.  So, on this skirt, I cute them at 6" and 4" wide.

Step 4:  Hem one long side of each ruffle.  I kept my fabric right on the edge of the presser foot of my sewing machine.

Both ruffles hemmed.

Step 5:  Line up all raw edges of both ruffles.

Step 6:  Pin at the bottom of each ruffle to make sure the all line up correctly.

Step 7:  Sew both ends of the ruffles together to make a circle.

 The two ends sewn together.

Step 8:  Either with your sewing machine or with a needle and thread (my preferred method), make a basting switch all the way around the raw edge of the fabric.  Tie a knot in one side so when you pull the other side to gather it or "ruffle" it, it doesn't all come unraveled.  Pull the end of the thread that is not tied until it is twice the length of the raw edge of the jeans.

Step 9:  Turn the jeans inside out.  Stick the ruffles inside the jeans so the raw edges meet.  Make sure the right side of the fabric and the right side of the jeans are facing each other.  Pin the two raw edges of the ruffle to the raw edge of the jeans...make sure you pin it with the gather so there is a ruffle when you sew it.

Step 10:  Sew the ruffle to the jeans.  Again, I used my presser foot as my guide.  Once I went all the way around, back-stitched to prevent it from coming unraveled, I turned my stitch from a straight stitch to a zig-zag stitch and sewed around the fabric one more time.

Step 11:  Once I zig-zag stitched all the way around the jeans/ruffle again, I cut the extra fabric off just below the zig-zag stitch.  That's to help the fabric from sticking out.

TA-DA!!!  You have a super cute, super easy, super cheap skirt for you super cute little girl!!!

Just a close up of where the jeans and the fabric are sewn together.

Doesn't it look super cute on a super cute little model?

A super cute little girl in the first super cute skirt I made.

Both skirts I have made.  You can definitely tell the difference in the width of the ruffles.  Remember, I mentioned on the first skirt I followed the directions to the T, cutting the two ruffles 4" and 2 3/4".  It makes a BIG difference.  They are both really cute skirts.  Paizlei LOVES wearing them!

A close-up of the two different prints Iused.  The first one has little snails on it.  It's so cute!
