When Zane and I got married, Gunnison was the LAST place I wanted to live. My sister who is 11 months older than I, used to live her. I'm not going to really go into details, however, her reputation her, has made it very difficult to live her. Or so I thought. Zane and I have lived in Gunnison for 4 of the 5 years we have been married. Up until this last year, I have had a really hard time making friends, mainly because I was trying to be friends with the same people Ginger was friends with, which will not work. We know each other. We say "hi" to each other in passing, but that's about it. And because of this issue with making friends, I had a REALLY bad attitude about living in Gunnison. I DID NOT like living here...AT ALL! Last year, I decided to change that attitude and make Gunnison a fun place to live. Make friends. Love where I live. To make a long story short, I did change my attitude, and in doing so, I have made some great friends, some I don't know what I have done without them in my life (**Emily**).
Once I changed my attitude, I started to notice more of the goodness of this great community I live in. There are so many people willing to give. Willing to help those in need. So many friendly faces. I realized there is goodness in my little community.
Some of this goodness was written about in the Deseret News on May 29th. My amazing doctor/bishop and his wife made a proposal to the high school football coach to donate some of the funds from a fundraiser, to help those in Joplin, MO. Several local high school kids, our doctor and a couple teachers put the word out on Facebook (something that isn't written in the story, but it was all over Facebook and text messages were being sent around, I received 4 text messages and 3 messages on FB). Dr. Judy and his wife were in charge of money donations as they were flying out, and the 2 teachers were in charge of item donations. Donation drop boxes were all over the community. On Friday afternoon, I had to go to the market for a few items, and just to the right of the entrance, there were boxes, bags, and more boxes FULL of items being donated. And that wasn't the only donation drop off, there were 3 other local business accepting donations.
This is just proof to me that I do, in fact, live in a GREAT community. A community I LOVE. There are seriously so many people willing to give. Willing to lend a helping hand. Willing to leave their community, the comforts of their own home, and go help those in need. I truly am blessed to live where I live.
