Unseasonably Warm and the Elephant

Before I forget this incident with Hunter, I figured I better document it.

The other day, we had some serious flooding in our neighborhood.  In December, there was a water main break a block east of where we live.  The water main happens to sit in the corner of a very large farm field...or better yet, the farm fields drain down into that corner.  Because of the warm weather, upper 50's and lower 60's.  All the snow in the farm field has been melting, as well as the lake that was formed because of the water main break (yeah, we live in such a great city, they wouldn't pump the water out of the hole it had been sitting in when the water main broke.  Anyway, to make a long story short, the water came rushing down our street.  Luckily, the city has culverts under the roads for when such flooding occurs.  Their is an empty building lot to the east of us.  The culvert just happens to drain into that lot.  Thank goodness, our driveway and basement are higher than that lot, or we would have been in serious trouble.  Anyway, the water went downhill, heading south from our house. It ended up in the field next to our neighbors behind us.  Which BTW, I LOVE the Wilson's!  They were my favorite customers when I worked at Walker's 5 years ago.  Anyway, their basement flooded.  With all of this going on, I called our city offices to let them know what was going on.  I was on my back from the pharmacy and noticed Deb out trying to dig water barriers to keep it from going into her basement.  I stopped to see if she needed any help and to let her know I had contacted the city.  I guess she has been after the city for several years to take care of the problem.  After the water main break, they told Deb, "you need to just deal with it.".  Kind of maddening, especially when the flooding is because of the city's poor drainage system, and the fact that they didn't clean up the water from the water main break.  Anyway, this said flooding, flooded an 8 block radius, including the former Mayor.

Get to the real story Heather...Zane decided to go for a ride to see if there was flooding elsewhere.  Back in November, we noticed one of the pumps that takes our drinking water to the tanks was gushing water.  So, he wanted to go see if that was part of the problem, why there was so much flooding.  This pump happens to be up above the field that has been flooding.  Anyway, it wasn't flooding.  But to get back to Gunnison, from Highway 89, we took another farm road...it's actually a country road...the name of the road is Christenberg Road.  There is a large sheep farm on the west side of that road.  When we turned on to Christenberg Road, Hunter started yelling at Zane to stop because there was, "A ELEPHANT IN DER, DADDY!  STOP!  WE NEED SEE ELEPHANT!!!".  It was so funny!!!!  Zane, being the A.MAZING Daddy he is, he turned around and pulled down the road so Hunter could see this "Elephant" he thought he saw.  Unfortunately, he couldn't see the elephant.  He couldn't figure out where it had gone.  Hunter knows that's a sheep farm.  We have driven by there numerous times.

I guess it's time to take the kids to visit Hogle Zoo in the spring time.  We have been waiting to take them, because we want them to actually enjoy it and remember it.

Oh, and what's with us and water main breaks and flooding.  Remember this post here?
